LG and 段 Partner for Integrated Linear and Streaming Solution
IPTV hardware manufacturer 段 announced today that it's partnering with LG电子(LG Electronics) to integrate LG's Netcast platform with 段's hybrid media gateway. By combining the two, 段 says consumers can receive both linear and over-the-top television without the need for a separate set-top box. Broadband and pay TV operators can then offer subscribers all-in-one access to linear and streamed content. According to an 段 executive, it's a way for broadband providers to avoid commoditization by making TV services a part of their package.
The first product of this partnership is the LG SP530 Media Player, which will now be supported by 段. The LG SP530 was designed to stream OTT video over an internet connection. When combined with 段's FusionTV application and Magi hybrid media gateway, it's able to stream live TV from over-the-air broadcasts or a pay TV service. The combined platform is targeted to subscribers of broadband services, 有线电视运营商, or other MVPDs (multichannel video programming distributors).
According to 段, the pay TV industry is interested in using consumer electronics devices as gateways, providing services through devices already in the home and avoiding the need for a separate set-top box. The company says this approach offers more flexibility and richness to subscribers.
Those attending the NCTC Independent Show in San Diego on July 29 and 30 can get a first look at the LG SP530 Media Player in booth 500).
